- 【Press Release】 A Groundbreaking First! Hsinchu Blood Center of the Taiwan Blood Services Foundation Conducts First-Ever Emergency Medical Blood Delivery Drone Demonstration
Press Release
Date: October 2, 2025 (Thursday) at 10:00 AM
Venue: Hsinchu Blood Center, Ai-Xin Building (No. 8, Lane 215, Guangming 11th Rd., Zhubei City)
The Hsinchu Blood Center will hold an “Emergency Medical Blood Delivery Drone Demonstration” on October 2 at 10 AM at the Ai-Xin Building. Through this project, the center aims to establish a new emergency medical air transport model that can be used not only for blood delivery but also for other critical medical rescue missions in the future.
In emergencies such as wars or natural disasters, the timeliness and reliability of blood supply are crucial for saving lives. However, current delivery methods that mainly rely on ground transportation can easily be hindered by road and geographical conditions.
This project utilizes drone technology to build an emergency medical blood transport system that can be activated instantly during crises, offering high efficiency, safety, and reliability to meet urgent medical needs.

In recent years, rapid advancements in technology have expanded the use of drones across various fields, including healthcare. Their potential in emergency blood transport has drawn significant attention. After careful evaluation, this demonstration will launch from the Ai-Xin Building of Hsinchu Blood Center and deliver to the Taoyuan Armed Forces General Hospital Hsinchu Branch. The one-way distance is approximately 5 km, with an estimated flight time of 10 minutes. The flight path runs mainly over the Touqian River Bridge, ensuring quick and safe delivery of blood to where it’s needed—significantly improving the efficiency of emergency medical response.

During the emergency drone delivery, Hsinchu Blood Center will use certified professional blood transport containers to ensure the stability and safety of the blood. These containers provide excellent insulation, shock resistance, and durability—maintaining proper temperature and preventing damage throughout the flight.

Objectives of the Emergency Medical Blood Delivery Drone Project:
1. Enhance Transport Efficiency: Drones can bypass traffic congestion and terrain obstacles, significantly reducing delivery time and ensuring blood reaches patients faster.
2. Improve Transport Safety: Advanced navigation and obstacle-avoidance systems ensure stability and safety during flight, protecting the integrity of the blood.
3. Optimize Operational Costs: Although initial costs are higher, as drone technology becomes widespread and emergency systems mature, overall operating costs will decrease. In wartime scenarios, drones offer clear advantages over ground transport in overcoming logistical barriers.
4. Increase Delivery Flexibility: Drones can easily access remote, mountainous, or disaster-affected areas, ensuring blood supply regardless of location—even in outlying islands.
5. Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Compared to traditional fuel-based transport, battery-powered drones produce zero direct emissions, contributing to eco-friendly and sustainable operations.

This drone-based emergency blood delivery represents a groundbreaking technological innovation with immense potential. In the future, drone endurance, payload capacity, and navigation systems will continue to improve. Despite existing challenges, as technology evolves and regulations mature, the use of drones in medical transport will become increasingly common. This project marks not the end but the beginning of a new chapter—laying the foundation for future applications in emergency blood delivery and beyond.
