June 14 marks World Blood Donor Day, established by the World Health Organization (WHO). In support of the 2026 global theme, “Every Drop Reflects Humanity’s Kindness and Compassion--Give Blood, Save Lives,”(One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.) the Taiwan Blood Services Foundation is also promoting its official dedicated short code “61420” to encourage more young people and members of the public to join the ranks of blood donors. The Foundation also hopes everyone will remember this shared code among blood donors and continue bringing hope and warmth to those in need.

World Blood Donor Day (World Blood Donor Day) was initiated in 2004 by the WHO, the Red Cross, and other international organizations. The day commemorates the birth of Dr. Karl Landsteiner, the Austrian-American scientist who discovered the  ABO  blood group system. It serves as an international observance to thank the countless voluntary, unpaid blood donors around the world whose generosity has helped save the lives of critically ill patients and given them a second chance at life.
Foundation Chairman Sheng-Mou Hou stated that every year on June 14, people around the world come together to celebrate World Blood Donor Day and pay tribute to millions of voluntary blood donors whose selfless contributions save lives every day. The significance of World Blood Donor Day is not only to express gratitude to donors, but also to remind us that blood donation creates a vital connection between people and embodies the kindness and compassion of mutual support.
Chairman Hou also noted that the WHO has outlined this year’s official objectives for World Blood Donor Day, including recognizing the invaluable contributions of blood donors, promoting regular voluntary unpaid blood donation, encouraging younger generations to participate, and calling on governments and civil organizations worldwide to invest more resources in national blood programs and strengthen resilience. The opening of the Annan Blood Component Manufacturing Site, built by the Taiwan Blood Services Foundation with an investment exceeding NT$1 billion, just before World Blood Donor Day in June, is therefore especially meaningful.

Chairman Hou further stated that the Annan Blood Component Manufacturing Site is not only Taiwan’s first state-of-the-art blood component preparation facility, but also a benchmark for Asia. Equipped with advanced intelligent and automated systems, it will provide higher-quality blood services for medical institutions in central and southern Taiwan. The Foundation is also willing to share its experience in implementing smart management at the Annan facility with the rest of the world.

As long as blood donors receive an SMS from '61420,' they can instantly identify it as an important official notice

Whenever blood donors receive a text message from “61420,” they can immediately recognize it as an official notification.

Foundation CEO Tsung-Hsi Wang stated that, in celebration of this year’s World Blood Donor Day, blood donation centers and bloodmobiles throughout Taiwan are hosting promotional activities. Through public awareness campaigns and social media engagement, the Foundation pays tribute to those who have long supported the blood donation movement. At the same time, it invites younger generations to become regular blood donors and make “helping others through blood donation” one of Taiwan’s most beautiful traditions.
Notably, the Foundation’s official dedicated short code “61420” combines the numbers “614” and “20.” The core message behind it is “World Blood Donor Day + Love You” (a Chinese homophone), expressing the Foundation’s deepest gratitude to blood donors across Taiwan and encouraging everyone to “Donate Blood, Save Lives.”
Wang also noted that, in order to reduce the risk of donors being deceived by fraudulent text messages, the Foundation applied to the Ministry of Digital Affairs for the exclusive short code “61420” as its official SMS sender ID. The Foundation emphasized that it will never proactively call donors to request personal information. Notifications sent through “61420” are limited to three situations: invitations and reminders for blood donation activities, urgent appeals for rare blood types, and reminders that a donor’s waiting period before the next donation is about to expire. In other words, whenever donors receive a text message from “61420,” they can immediately identify it as an official notification and should not mistakenly delete it as spam or fraud.

In response to the increasing number of fraud cases, the press conference also invited Investigation Team Captain Ming-Tsung Chen of the Zhongzheng Second Precinct, Taipei City Police Department, to explain common SMS scam tactics and prevention measures. These include impersonating government agencies or banks to trick people into clicking phishing links and disclosing personal information, as well as sending fraudulent cash-on-delivery packages. The public is urged to follow three important principles: “Do not click suspicious links, do not provide personal information, and do not transfer money.”
