Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim Donates Blood for the 15th Time — Like Visiting a Familiar Kitchen Despite her busy schedule, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim took time on the 22nd of this month (October) to visit the Nanhai Blood Donation Room of the Taipei Blood Center, where she donated 250cc of whole blood. This marks her fourth donation this year and her 15th donation in total.
On the rainy afternoon of the 22nd, Vice President Hsiao arrived at the Nanhai Blood Donation Room with a simple entourage. Upon seeing Taiwan Blood Foundation CEO Wang Tsung-Hsi, her first words were, “It’s time for my (blood) donation, so I made time to come by.” As a regular blood donor, she moved through the entire process — the pre-donation interview, handwashing, hydration, and reclining on the donor chair for the blood draw — with complete ease, “as familiar as walking into her own kitchen.” Even at the moment of needle insertion, she did not so much as frown, remaining calm and composed.
During the donation, the Vice President and CEO Wang exchanged their experiences with blood donation. Wang noted that, based on Taiwan Blood Foundation’s observations, the rate of fainting or temporary discomfort among donors over the age of 50 is lower than that of other age groups. Therefore, the Foundation not only encourages young people to donate blood but also welcomes middle-aged and older adults to join the “50+ donors,” as donating helps boost metabolism. Vice President Hsiao agreed, saying that being able to donate blood is a blessing — a sign of good health.
After completing her donation, CEO Wang presented Vice President Hsiao with the Foundation’s popular science book River of the Body: A Journey Through Blood and a blood donation T-shirt on behalf of Chairman Hou Sheng-Mao. She flipped through the book and showed great interest in Taiwan’s unique “Mi-Tien-Pao blood type,” which appears with high frequency among Indigenous peoples. She also took the opportunity to learn more about blood bank operations and blood bag labeling. Before leaving, the Foundation invited the Vice President to sign the donation T-shirt, which will become one of the treasured exhibits of the digital education museum set to open next year.
